A Dubai trade name needs acceptance from the relevant licensing authority. Name reservation forms part of the company-setup process, but it does not grant a business licence or establish trademark protection. Check the authority’s current naming conditions and the proposed activity before applying. Review existing brand rights separately before spending on signage, packaging or a website. Keep the different names and rights separate
A name available as a domain can still conflict with an existing mark. An authority’s name acceptance does not replace a trademark assessment. (Official trademark-registration service; UAE Trademarks Law)
Check the authority and legal form
Confirm whether the business will register through Dubai DET or a particular free-zone authority. Use that authority’s naming requirements and application route. Do not assume that one zone’s accepted name or procedure applies to another registry.
Check how the legal form must appear and how the name relates to the licensed activity. Obtain guidance for names involving a person, a geographical term or a word that may be restricted. Do not assume an additional payment can make any proposed word acceptable. (Official company-establishment steps; Official trade-name service)
Where the business uses Arabic and English versions, confirm the accepted spelling and presentation with the authority. Keep the issued records consistent across the company documents.
Search before committing to the brand
Prepare several names that fit the activity. Search the licensing records through the relevant official route. Then review potential trademark conflicts and the markets where the business will use the brand.
A spelling change does not necessarily avoid confusion with an existing mark. Distinguish a company-name availability search from an assessment of whether a mark can be registered or used safely.
Read the UAE trademark registration guide for the separate protection process.
Reserve the name and track its conditions
Use the actual reservation certificate for the expiry date. Do not rely on an old article’s universal validity period, fee or extension rule. Check the current service requirements before payment. (Official trade-name service; Official company-establishment steps)
Keep the brand and company identity clear
A business may use a brand that differs from its registered company name. Check the licensing, consumer-information and trademark requirements for that arrangement. Contracts and invoices should identify the correct contracting entity.
Confirm any additional approvals for signage and the wording used on premises. A reserved name does not establish permission for a particular sign or location.
If the business expands abroad, review brand rights in those markets. A UAE registration does not provide worldwide trademark protection. (UAE Trademarks Law)
Plan a name change across the business
Before applying for a new name, review the company documents and required approvals. Check whether the licensing authority needs amendments to the constitutional documents or related records.
After approval, update the bank, contracts and invoicing records where required. Review websites, email addresses, permits and customer notices. Record any trademark or domain changes as separate work rather than assuming the licence amendment completes them.
If an authority rejects the name or raises an infringement issue, use the actual notice to establish the reason, response deadline and available next steps.
Questions founders ask
Does reserving a name let me start trading?
No. Complete the required licensing approvals before conducting the activity. (Official company-establishment steps)
Does a trade name protect my logo?
Do not treat name reservation as trademark registration. Assess the mark and its protection separately. (Official trademark-registration service; UAE Trademarks Law)
Can I use the same name for another company?
Confirm availability, authority rules and existing rights for that specific application. An earlier reservation does not guarantee approval elsewhere.
