An employment residence visa is generally based on a job with a UAE employer. A partner or investor residence route is based on a qualifying ownership or investment connection. An owner who also works in the business needs the company documents and employment position checked together. The relevant immigration authority decides residence applications; the licensing and employment authorities determine the company-side requirements. Start with the UAE Government work-visa guidance and your company's authority.

What is the difference between an employment visa and a partner visa in the UAE
The distinction is the basis of the application. Employment residence connects a person to an employer. An owner route requires evidence of the person's investment or ownership and the conditions of that particular category.
The phrase partner visa can describe different services. For example, RAKEZ has an investor and partner visa service under a registered company. Dubai also has a separate Green Residence service for investors and partners. Ask which exact permit is being proposed before comparing validity, cost or renewal conditions.
This is a route-selection guide. The individual service card and the issuing authority's assessment determine the application requirements.
When a founder should consider a partner or investor route
Begin with the company's actual ownership records. Check the licence, memorandum or articles, shareholder register and any appointment as manager or director. The records should explain which company the person owns and the role they will perform.
RAKEZ describes its service as a route for shareholders under their registered company, subject to immigration approval. Dubai's Green Residence card asks for a passport, photograph, trade licence and partnership, constitutional or investment documentation, as well as the relevant approvals. These are specific application routes, rather than a residency right created by owning any number of shares. See RAKEZ's owner service and GDRFA Dubai's Green Residence requirements.
For an ownership-based application, ask the authority to confirm whether your particular shareholding, company type and documents support that route. Do this before paying for a licence package on the assumption that residence is included.

When employment residence may be appropriate
If a company is hiring you, the application should reflect the real employment relationship. Confirm the legal employer, job title, contract, place of work and authority responsible for work authorisation.
For example, RAKEZ’s employee service is designed for companies sponsoring and onboarding employees. Mainland employment follows the applicable employment and immigration channels, while free zones have their own administrative processes. The UAE Government’s work-permit guidance explains the role of MoHRE permits for establishments registered with it.
Choosing an employee title purely to bypass an owner-route condition can leave the employment paperwork inconsistent with the application. Resolve the underlying eligibility question first.
Can a shareholder also be an employee
A shareholding does not, by itself, settle the person's employment position. Before using an employment route for an owner, obtain confirmation from the relevant employment or free-zone authority for that company and role.
Present both sets of facts: the ownership documents and the proposed duties, contract and remuneration. Ask whether separate work authorisation or an employment record is needed and who should submit it. The UAE Government's guidance on recruiting in free zones is a starting point; the company's authority must confirm the applicable procedure.
The same care applies where someone already holds family-sponsored or long-term residence. Residence and permission to work need separate attention. For example, MoHRE publishes a work-permit service for family-sponsored dependants.
Documents to prepare before choosing the route
Use this as a preparation list, then match it to the current service requirements. Not every item applies to every applicant.
For a free-zone employee, compare this list with the authority's actual checklist. DMCC's employee visa guidance, for example, separates entry-permit documents from the later medical, insurance and Emirates ID evidence. An attested qualification can depend on the selected job title.
Does mainland or free-zone registration change the decision
It changes which authority and administrative process you must check. Ask for the company licence issuer, the employment channel and the immigration authority handling the residence permit. These may have different responsibilities.
Also confirm that the company is ready to submit applications. DMCC, for example, requires an active licence and establishment card and clearance of relevant sanctions before a new employee application. Those conditions belong to DMCC's service; they should not be copied as a complete checklist for every free zone.
If staff numbers matter to your choice of package, review the free-zone visa allocation and employee guide before committing to a workspace.
A decision path for owners and employees
Identify the company. Record whether it is mainland or free zone and which authority issued its licence.
Confirm ownership. If you are an owner, ask which investor or partner category the documents can support. If you are not, start with the relevant employment route.
Confirm the work. If you will be employed, ask what contract and work authorisation are required, including where you also own shares.
Check current residence. Establish whether the procedure involves a new entry permit, status change, transfer or another service.
Get the route confirmed. Obtain the applicable checklist and costs from the relevant authority or a licensed adviser before filing.
For an illustrative founder who owns shares and will run daily operations, the first useful step is to present those two facts together. For an employee joining without ownership, the starting point is the employer's hiring process. These examples identify what to check; they do not establish eligibility.
Family sponsorship and renewal
Both employee and business-owner routes can involve a separate family-residence application, subject to the sponsor's and family members' conditions. The UAE Government's family-residence guidance sets out the general framework. Check income or financial evidence, accommodation, relationship documents and the rules for the family member concerned.
Before renewal, review any change in employer, shareholding, company status or role against the original permit category. Ask what must be amended or cancelled before making the change. Do not assume that a valid card resolves an underlying change in eligibility.
Frequently asked questions
Can a company owner have an employment visa
Check the company's legal structure, employment rules and the owner's actual role with the relevant authority. Ownership alone does not establish which employment or residence process is appropriate.
Can a partner sponsor family members
Potentially, subject to the applicable family-sponsorship conditions. The partner's residence approval and each dependant's application are separate decisions.
Does owning shares automatically create a residency right
No. The chosen owner or investor category has its own evidence requirements and approval process.
Can a free-zone company apply for employee residence visas
An eligible company can apply through its free-zone and immigration process, subject to company readiness, allocation and the applicant's requirements. The authority grants the permit.
Does either visa establish UAE tax residence
A residence permit concerns immigration status. Tax residence depends on separate rules and evidence. See our UAE Tax Residency Certificate guide before relying on a visa for a tax position.
